Alaska First Time Home Buyer Grants

Alaska First Time Home Buyer Grants

Are you considering the purchase of a home in Alaska? Purchasing a home in any state is an exciting prospect!
Exciting and sometimes daunting! However, don't let yourself become overwhelmed with the process. It is my plan to give you some useful information in this article about first time home buyer grants which will help you along the way.

Before we get to the topic of Alaska first time home buyer grants, I would like to give you some fun "Facts and Misconceptions" about your chosen state. (If you are relatively new to Alaska, I don't want you to look too much like a tourist!) These facts were obtained from the State of Alaska official website located on the web at http://www.state.ak.us/local.

FACTS:

  • "Of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, 17 are in Alaska. Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America, is 20,320 ft. above sea level. Denali, the Indian name for the peak, means 'The Great One'."

  • "The Yukon River, almost 2,000 miles long, is the third longest river in the U.S. There are more than 3,000 rivers in Alaska and over 3 million lakes. The largest, Lake Iliamna, encompasses over 1,000 square miles."

  • "There are more than 70 potentially active volcanoes in Alaska. Several have erupted in recent times. The most violent volcanic eruption of the century took place in 1912 when Novarupta Volcano erupted, creating the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes which is now part of Katmai National Park."

    MISCONCEPTIONS:

  • "Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s."

  • "Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state's highway system are paved."

  • "The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable."

On this same website, the current governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, states, "Welcome to the Great State of Alaska! I invite you to visit our rainforests in the southeast, proud fishing villages in the west, industrious tundra towns up north and land of the midnight sun in the interior. Discover the Last Frontier - you'll receive the warmest of welcomes in Alaska."

Wow! What an introduction! It certainly sounds like a state to be proud of!

So, if Alaska is your choice, read on for information related to the Alaska first time home buyer grants program.

To begin with, the State of Alaska does offer an Alaska first time home buyer grant program for its residents. This is good news because not all states are able to offer assistance to first time home buyers. The state agency which maintains Alaska's first time home buyer grant program is the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. Alaska offers several different types of grants. Which one or ones you will qualify for will depend on varying factors. You should visit http://www.ahfc.state.ak.us/home/index.cfm to determine which grants are best suited to your needs and for which grants you may qualify.

In addition, the federal government offers grant assistance for first time home buyers in Alaska. This program is maintained by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and is called the Homes and Communities program. Their website contains useful information and applications. The website for the grant program maintained by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development can be visited by using this link, HUD Grant Information.

Another website I would recommend that you view is Visit the Government Grants. This website offers a list of all federal government grant programs. It would be a good idea to take some time and browse through this site to see what it offers and the qualifications for application.

Don’t forget the importance of your credit score. Even if you qualify for any Alaska first time home buyer grants, you still have to qualify for a loan. See my information on credit repair made easy if you need help.

If you don’t qualify for a grant you may qualify for down payment assistance. They are sometimes easier to obtain.
