Credit Repair Letters, What Are They?

  • to request that a credit bureau remove inquiries;

  • to request that a creditor reduce a debt owed, write a credit repair letter;

  • to request settlement of a debt with a creditor or collection agency;

  • to request a credit bureau to investigate an inaccurate credit rating; and.

  • to request a free credit report.

  • to request a deletion letter or a payoff letter.

The purpose of these letters is to attempt to remove bad entries and inquiries from our credit report. This way we can repair credit and improve our credit score. We want to try to negotiate a lower debt and establish a payment plan with a creditor, to request that a credit bureau investigate an entry which we believe is incorrect, or to request a credit report from a reporting agency.

Draft Your Letter, Proofread, and Keep a Copy

Draft the letter and then proofread it for content. Once you are satisfied with the content, make a copy for your records and prepare it for mailing. It would be a good idea to contact the recipient a few days after mailing to make sure the letter has been received and to see what the recipient's procedure is for handling your type of request. Note on your copy of the letter who you spoke to, the date and time, and the outcome of your conversation. Always make note on your copy of the letter any follow up conversations with the recipient.

While preparing your credit repair letters you should keep in mind the outcome you hope to achieve. If you are requesting an action which requires the recipient to investigate some reporting issue, you should be sure to include copies of any substantiating evidence.

Keep all Originals of Your Proof

Be sure to keep all originals in your own file. If you are writing to request the settlement of a debt owed or to request that an amount owed be reduced, be sure to include your reason for the request - recent layoff from work, unexpected medical bills, sudden death of a spouse, etc. Creditors may be more wiling to work with you if they know the reason behind the request.

All-in-all, credit repair letters are easy to use, quick to prepare, and inexpensive to process. If you send repair bad credit letters to reporting agencies or creditors, you may not obtain the outcome you initially were hoping to achieve; however, at the same time, YOU JUST MIGHT! So, fire up your word processor or your typewriter or grab a piece of paper and a pen and draft that initial letter. Do you really have anything to lose?
