Today mortgage lenders are using third party credit reporting agencies to come up with your "middle score". These reporting agencies take all three of your credit reports and report the "middle score". For instance, if on TransUnion you have a score of 680, on Equifax a score of 720 and on Experian a score of 734, the 720 score is your middle score which is used for your mortgage credit.

Mortgage lenders will look at the middle score and determine your credit risk. A score of 621 is usually the cut off for "good" credit risk, everything below 621 is usually considered "bad." It is definitely preferable to have a 700 or above - especially for home loans.

How is this done?

Each bureau has their own formula for generating a credit score from the data on your credit report. Your credit history compiled by each bureau is used to create this score. Since they each use their own formula, you need to see each of their reports. Now that you have the three scores, look at the one in the middle. That's the score the lenders look at.

This middle score can make or break your loan approval. So be sure to get a copy of your credit report from all three reporting bureaus. See what credit scores they give you and pay attention to the score in the middle.

If you find that score is the middle is not very high, compare the three credit reports. You may find incorrect information on one to two of them. Take the time to clean up those report so your scores will be higher. That way you can raise the middle score.
