To be considered a first time home buyer in New Jersey you must not have owned a home in the past three years. This way you qualify for the various special buying programs available. Although New Jersey has some programs where you can't have owned any home in the past. So be sure to understand the specifics of any program you get excited about.
There is free one-on-one counseling if you're nervous about buying that first home. That is pretty awesome!
Remember to save money for the down payment if you're interested in buying a home. I find many wanting to buy, but when asked don't have any money saved. There are some programs to help with the down payment, but they get used up fast. Thus, set up a savings program right away and begin saving.
Also, there are many non-profits in New Jersey to help with the down payment. Sometimes these are provided as a second mortgage, but that still helps with the down payment.
Finding the right real estate agent is just one piece of the puzzle, be sure to gain all the knowledge you can to become a savvy buyer.
