To begin with, the State of South Dakota does not offer a South Dakota first time home buyer grant program for its residents; however, there is one program that is very close. This is good news because not all states are able to offer assistance to first time home buyers.
The state agency which maintains this program for South Dakota is the South Dakota Housing Development Authority. It is called the "Fixed Rate Plus Loan." Applicants can obtain up to 3% as a deferred second. There is no interest charged, you don't have to make any payments, and no additional fees. Sounds like a grant doesn't it, but it is a loan.
There is a mortgage program you have to qualify for in order to use this assistance. Unfortunately, this particular program has a higher interest rate. So you will have to investigate to see whether its worth applying for.
You must be a first time buyer to qualify. The cool thing you can become a first home buyer again. You must not have owned a house in the past three years to become to have this classification.
They also have a program for repeat home buyers called "Repeat Homebuyer Loan Program." This program also has down payment assistance associated with it.
As with all programs, there are limitations and restrictions you will need to look into. South Dakota is sure good to their residents!

Anytime you apply for assistance programs you need to prepare yourself for a waiting period. From application to funding can take a period of time. While waiting, start putting a little money away.
Why is that a good idea? Well, funds run out early for many of these programs. While waiting to hear, you may be surprised how much you can save. Then if things don't work out, you may have just enough saved for a low down payment program like FHA.
You'll have to find a lender who works with these programs anyway. FHA offers products that will bend around your various mortgage needs.
Perhaps a grant is not available in your state. Or you do not qualify for one. Don't get discouraged. If you still want to save money, check out this page that discusses the zero down payment program.
